Layered Protection for Improved Home Security

November 14th, 2019

When it comes time to reevaluate your home security, you may come across the term "layered protection." This simply means finding several ways you can provide your home with additional security instead of choosing just one method of security.

Layers of Protection

Layered protection takes on many forms when you start discussing your available home security options. For example, you can choose from a number of different sensors for the home while starting a neighborhood watch program. Instead of relying only on the sensors you install, you are taking that protection a step further.

Ultimately, the purpose of layered protection is to stop an intruder from getting into the home. You want them to get caught before they have the chance to actually steal anything from the home. Therefore, layered protection creates an environment that a burglar will want to pass on.

The Community

This is your first layer of protection. A neighborhood watch is a good crime deterrent and makes it less likely that you will become a target for a burglary. You can join or create a neighborhood watch program in your community and work with your neighbors to ensure a safer and more secure environment for everyone.

Even just getting to know your neighbors is a good way to provide more protection for your home and family. When you get to know your neighbors, you will have those extra sets of eyes on your home and property when you need them most.

The Yard

The next layer is protecting your yard. When your yard is well-kept and maintained, you are sending out the message that you care about your property. If you travel, make sure to have someone keep up with this maintenance as well as pick up your mail to keep up with the illusion that someone is at home.

You should also make sure that there are no areas of the yard that would make perfect cover for a burglar. Trim down any overgrown hedges and bushes and make sure that your yard is well-lit, so a burglar has no hiding spot outside of the home.

Securing Your Doors and Windows

This is the next layer of protection for your home. Make sure that all doors and windows are locked and secured. If it has been a while since you changed the locks, maybe now is the time to do so.

All of this may seem obvious, but when the weather gets nicer, we tend to open doors and windows and sometimes forget to lock them at the end of the day.

Home Security System

The next layer is your home security system. Sensors, alarm systems, lighting, and other features can all be used together to provide your home with the best possible protection.

From motion sensors to window and door sensors, there are many other layers of protection you can use in the home.

Anytime a burglar tries to gain access to the home, you will be immediately notified along with the authorities, so they won't have the chance to steal.
